What You Need To Know
Plan Your Storage
Put items you may need at the front. Items such as seasonal clothes, golf clubs and other items are not always thought about during the off-season for those items. If these items are going to be stored into another season, you may want to have easy access to them later. Back up financial records should also be kept towards the front of the storage container, to avoid having to dig for them after you have moved your belongings into the unit.
Pack Your Unit Efficiently
To make the most of your storage space, you'll want to position boxes and items of similar size together to minimize wasted space. Place smaller boxes and belongs into drawers and in appliances to maximize space while moving. Chest of drawers and dryers make great storage cubbies. Armoires can also hold a lot of extra moving boxes. Remember to also leave space for access to the rear of the unit.
Label Appropriately
Remember to clearly mark each moving box or each plastic bin to ease the sorting after you move or store your belongings. Store items from the same area of the house into boxes or plastic bins. Simply write a brief description on the container of items in the container, so that the container may be placed in the appropriate area of your new home after you move. For plastic bins that you may not want to write on, simply put a sticky note on them and cover over it with a piece of tape. This will prevent the note from coming off during the move.
Secure Your Belongings
Items are less likely to get damaged with portable storage as opposed to self-storage, because less moving occurs. However, there is still some movement from your property to our storage facility and back. To protect your belongings, you should place dust sheets or protective covering over soft furnishings. Moving blankets, towels and regular blankets all make great buffers so that items that may rub together during shipping, moving or storing are better protected. Take care to use packing supplies such as Peanuts and packing tape to secure your more breakable objects in moving boxes or plastic totes and or bins while moving.
